Lake Norman Elizabeth Davis June 21, 2025
With 520 miles of shoreline, Lake Norman is a boater’s paradise. Whether you're cruising to a waterfront restaurant, anchoring in a quiet cove, or enjoying watersports with family, safety on the water is absolutely essential.
Each year, thousands of boaters enjoy Lake Norman—but unfortunately, not all are prepared. Before you launch, here’s what you need to know to stay safe and compliant.
All children under 13 must wear a life jacket while on a moving vessel in NC.
Adults should wear one too—especially when waters are crowded or conditions change quickly.
Have one U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket per person on board.
Boating while impaired is illegal and dangerous.
Alcohol slows reaction time and impairs judgment—especially risky on a busy lake like Norman.
The penalties are similar to DUI laws and include fines, jail time, and license suspension.
Understand basic “right of way” rules between powerboats, sailboats, and paddlecraft.
Use proper lighting if boating after dusk.
Stay in marked channels and follow posted signs (especially in no-wake zones).
Storms can build quickly. Check the radar before you go out.
Sudden winds can create dangerous chop, especially for small or open boats.
Let someone know your planned route and return time.
Keep a cell phone or VHF radio on board in case of emergency.
Have a whistle or horn and an anchor on board at all times.
If you were born on or after January 1, 1988, you are legally required to complete a NASBLA-approved Boater Safety Course before operating a boat or personal watercraft (Jet Ski) in North Carolina.
These allow you to complete the course and test at your own pace.
Offered by NC Wildlife Resources Commission
Often hosted at local fire departments, marinas, and community centers

Many local marinas also post signs when classes are offered on-site.
Living near the lake means enjoying a lifestyle many dream about—but it also means being a good neighbor on the water. Wake awareness, dock safety, and respectful boating go a long way in keeping our lake enjoyable and safe for everyone.
Lake access homes and waterfront properties are always in demand—but potential buyers often ask about safety, boating rules, and lake culture. Having confidence in your knowledge makes your investment more enjoyable (and can even help resale value later).
